Do You Have NIHB Dental Coverage?
The Non-Insured Health Benefits program covers dental care for eligible First Nations and Inuit people across Canada. We accept it at our Thornhill clinic, and our team checks your coverage before treatment starts.
You may be eligible if you live in Canada and are one of the following:
- A First Nations person registered under the Indian Act
- An Inuk recognized by one of the four Inuit land claim organizations
- A child under two years old whose parent qualifies
There is no application process for NIHB. If you meet the criteria, you can use your benefits. Eligibility is not based on your income, which is one way it differs from the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
What Dental Services Does NIHB Cover?
NIHB covers a range of dental treatments when a dentist recommends them. At our clinic that includes:
Dental x-rays
Cleanings and preventive care
How much is covered depends on your eligibility, what the dentist finds, and the program’s frequency limits. Some treatments need approval before they begin, which we explain below.
A few treatments fall outside the program entirely. Dental implants, implant supported dentures, fixed bridges, and any work done only to improve appearance are not covered.
What to Bring and What Happens at Your Visit
1. Tell us you have NIHB
Mention it when you call, fill in the form, or arrive at the clinic. Calling ahead helps us confirm a dentist is available and cuts down
2. Bring your identification
We examine the area, take x-rays if needed, find the source of the problem, and explain your options.
3. See the dentist
We examine the area, take x-rays if needed, find the source of the problem, and explain your options.
4. Start eligible treatment
Some care can begin the same day. Anything that needs prior approval, we prepare and submit for you.
Can Treatment Start Today, or Does NIHB Need to Approve It First?
Some dental treatment can be provided right away and billed afterward. Other treatment needs predetermination, which means NIHB reviews the plan before the work begins.
Often begins without prior approval
- Emergency dental exams
- Standard dental x-rays
- Eligible fillings
- Standard root canal treatment
- Most simple tooth extractions
- Many routine surgical extractions
Usually needs predetermination
- Dental crowns
- Partial and replacement dentures
- Root canal retreatment
- Major oral surgery
- Sedation and general anesthesia
- Treatment beyond normal frequency limits

Common Questions About NIHB Dental Coverage
Yes. We accept NIHB dental benefits for eligible First Nations and Inuit patients. When you contact us we check your client information, confirm what your coverage includes, and tell you whether any part of the treatment needs approval first.
Walk-ins are welcome during clinic hours and we keep same-day appointments open for urgent problems. Calling first helps, because we can assess how urgent it is and confirm a dentist is free. We cannot promise every walk-in receives full treatment the same day, but we will see you and get you out of pain.
Standard root canal treatment and most simple and surgical extractions may be covered without prior approval. Root canal retreatment and more complex surgical cases usually need predetermination. Wisdom teeth removal may be covered when it is medically necessary. We confirm coverage for your specific tooth and procedure before starting.
Crowns and dentures may be covered within the program’s limits, and both normally require approval in advance. Dental implants, implant supported dentures, and fixed bridges are excluded from NIHB. We do place dental implants at our clinic, but they would be paid privately or through financing.
NIHB may cover orthodontic treatment in limited, medically necessary cases, and approval is always required first. We do not provide braces or aligners at our clinic, but we can refer you to a provider who does.
If you have private dental insurance, that plan is usually billed first and NIHB may cover part of what remains. If you have CDCP as well, tell us when you book and we will confirm the correct billing order before treatment begins.
